Pound tumbles against dollar on better US news

The pound plunged almost three cents to a two-month low against the dollar as the US currency strengthened on the back of upbeat economic news.

Paul Robson, currency strategist at Royal Bank of Scotland, said the dollar was likely to be stronger against the pound throughout Christmas, with the pound settling at around $1.60 over the period.
