Passenger From Nigeria Tries To Blow Up Jet Near Detroit

A Northwest Airlines passenger from Nigeria, who said he was acting on al-Qaida's instructions, tried to blow up the plane Friday as it was landing in Detroit, law enforcement and national security officials said.

Representative Peter King, who sits on the House Homeland Security Committee, said the explosive device was "fairly sophisticated," and the suspect was Abdul Mudallad, a 23-year-old Nigerian.
